So should fashion be about the latest young thing around town, or should fashion be built to last, a bit like middle aged women themselves. Because if you've had your stomach stretched by a few kids percolating in your belly, spent the last 10 or 15 years at birthday parties and sporting events where the highlight is pouring out the orange cordial at halftime and find that wearing a pair of gumboots is about the closest you get to wearing black boots, then frankly you are well and truly middle aged. You see, fashion just doesn't mean that much anymore and that is one of the joys of getting older. Paying a fortune for a piece of cloth that looked like it was made to hold your groceries, and I'm talking those string bags too (which have even less cloth) then you probably lost the plot a long time ago.

Forget about fashion, but you don't have to forget what makes you feel and look good. Instead, concentrate more upon buying clothes that will last more than a season and demand to wear a comfortable pair of shoes. It might be alright for Sara Jessica Parker and her bunch of Sex and the City friends to go prancing around in their high heels but frankly, if they weren't on a film set, there'd be a few people muttering the dreaded phrase "mutton dressed as lamb".

Instead of trying to look 23 and buying all those useless products that pretend to remove wrinkles, cellulite, stretch marks and possibly dandruff - how about we rejoice in our middle aged bodies and put them to the test. You don't have to let yourself go. After all, go for a walk, swim, run or ride a bike - you'll find yourself a lot fitter and firmer than if you just get in the car. Cut out the fatty foods and cut down on the bread. There is no need for your body to sag even if your face can't withstand the forces of gravity. There are going to be a lot of women over 35 very soon and when you are in a majority, well that becomes a fashion statement itself. This is why I say that midlife is the new black. Soon everyone will be doing it.
