By all accounts Emma has done a fantastic job capturing the shy, troubled Diana as she navigates her way through a dysfunctional marriage and insatiable media attention.
Now, following in Emma Corrin’s footsteps, is Kristen Stewart. The actress, best known for her role in Twilight, has been cast as the doomed princess in the upcoming film Spencer.
However, not all actresses are able to capture the essence of the former royal.
Whilst Corrin successfully portrayed the troubled princess, previous actresses have not been so fortunate. Australian actress Naomi Watts was widely panned for her starring role in the 2013 film Princess. The movie failed to appeal to critics or audiences and flopped. This was partly due to an appalling script but also Watts’ performance.
The casting didn’t make much sense either. Diana was only 36 when she died. Watts, at 45 was simply too old to play the young princess. And where Diana was tall, Naomi is short. Unfortunately, these discrepencies were too big a stretch to convince anyone that Naomi Watts could be the Princess of Wales.
Kristen Stewart is 30 and much closer to Diana’s age. And although not as tall as Diana, Stewart is certainly much taller than Watts. Given that her age and height are more of a match to the Princess, will Kristen Stewart have better luck channelling Diana?
