I loathe superhero movies. All those mind numbing Spiderman films, irksome Batman plots and ridiculous Superman scenarios had turned me off capes and spandex forever. So how do I explain why I’m at the cinema watching The Avengers and enjoying it?
The constant nagging of my son is one reason. The clincher was Joss Whedon.
Joss Whedon is the guy behind the cult classics Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Serenity. Joss Whedon is the writer who cares about his characters and makes them believable. Joss Whedon is the director who creates realistic roles for women other than as attractive sidekicks. Joss Whedon is one of the few guys in Hollywood (James Cameron is the other) who can make a big budget film driven by dialogue and characters rather than fast cars, guns and nude scenes.
The Avengers mixes great action sequences with humour and a cracking pace. The cast includes Robert Downey Jnr, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel l Jackson who all deliver outstanding performances.
The Avengers has become the biggest box office hit of all time. Since its release it has broken records that nobody realised could be broken.
I enjoyed the film and it has made me realise that in the right hands a superhero movie really can be good fun. But those hands have to be Joss Whedon’s!
