How sad to hear that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have split.
Their marriage lasted eight months.
Late last year pictures of their secret wedding were leaked on the internet: Miley barefoot and dancing to Uptown Funk in her Vivienne Westwood wedding dress and Liam lining up alcohol shots with his brothers. It was a low key ceremony attended by close friends and family.
It seemed that a decade of on-again-off-again relationship drama was now set for a happy ending.
But when it comes to celebrity marriages, there is no such thing as a happy ending.
Take Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, for example. Their twelve-year relationship produced numerous children, several movies and a multitude of houses. Yet their marriage was doomed. So why would Liam and Miley be any different?
Three reasons why we thought Miley and Liam’s relationship would last:
- Miley and Liam met when they were teenagers on The Last Song movie set. She was 16 and he was 19. They started dating, got engaged, and bonded strongly.
- During that time Miley went from playing the sweet Hannah Montana, to a twerking, pot smoking, pan-sexual party-goer. Liam supported her transformation even though his life was more stable. He was usually found surfing and hanging out with his brothers.
- These two were meant for each other — well at least that’s how it appeared. Despite their volatile relationship they always referred fondly to each other in interviews.
And then the romance died. The engagement was called off and Miley and Liam went their separate ways.
Miley continued to make headlines and media reports indicate that children and parents considered her a terrible role model.
Liam kept acting, although The Hunger Games still remains the movie for which he is best remembered.
It’s on again
Several years later they reunited and Miley was pictured alongside Liam and his family in Byron Bay. Entertainment sites reported that the engagement was back on.
Miley, it seems, had found her way back to Prince Charming and Liam had reclaimed his Snow White. The fairytale might be real after all.
But in August 2019, they shocked everyone by announcing their separation after images of Miley making out with a girlfriend flooded social media.
Liam retreated to Byron Bay where a succession of photos depicted him staring forlornly into the surf. He was said to be heartbroken.
Yet it turns out he filed for divorce first citing irreconcilable differences. Miley, it is said, was taken by surprise.
Now the war of words has begun. She says he partied, boozed and took drugs while he says she was unfaithful.
Which is why it’s all so sad. The divorce looks set to get nasty and social media and tabloid newspapers will be there to fuel any heated exchanges and mutual recriminations.
This all gets back to why their split is depressing: we wanted to believe Miley and Liam would have a happy ending.
And that some celebrities, at least, could stay married forever.
