Using Twitter in Business

Twitter me this or Twitter me that – what does it mean to have a twitter account? Warriors looking for new avenues to promote their presence might want to consider joining Twitter, a micro blogging site that connects with thousands upon thousands of Twitter users across the world.

You’ve probably heard of blogging, after all Blogger, Typepad and WordPress have been around for a few years. Twitter has taken the concept of blogging but has placed a word limit on it. You are restricted to 140 characters – no more than a sentence and a short sentence at that. You might wonder what point there is to a micro-blog of 140 characters but consider an alternative view – if you’ve tried to read a friend’s blog you’ll appreciate that limiting the amount of text to read is not a bad idea. After all, you’ve probably heard that ‘less is more’ or even ‘less is best’. Having a word restriction means that you have just enough space to update people on a good website, breaking news, a good party or post a query.

How Will it Help Your Business?

The beauty of Twitter is that people will follow you if they have an interest in what you or your business is doing. In a business situation, you might be selling a product or service and want to keep your customers regularly updated.  This might mean that you have an interesting link that you post about a product , an update about your service or a general chat about life. Twitter has been referred to as the water cooler in the office – a place where people gather to chat (albeit in short sentences)

In the business community, Twitter is giving you a wider profile than you could otherwise achieve. To remain ahead of competitors is essential and engaging with Web 2.0 technology (see our article about using these technologies) will give you a market edge. By understanding and using social networking tools your company will be seen as innovative. This will allow your business to gain an increasingly higher online presence in search engines that will in turn allow you to reach a broader market. In tough economic times it could make the difference between staying in business or going out of business. The old ways of marketing such as cold calling are long gone and are being replaced by video, audio and blog/microblog posts that all involve Web 2.0 technology.

Obtaining a Twitter account

  • Go to http://twitter.com/ to create an account,
  • give it a name,
  • add an image,
  • create a pseudonym (if you want to keep your privacy)
  • a link to your website
  • and as much personal information that you wish to divulge.

You have the option of a private account so that only people you invite can access your updates or you can make it public so that anyone can read it. When people want to access your Twitter updates you will receive an email generated by the program that tells you who is following you and a link to their Twitter profile and an option to follow them.  Once you’ve signed into Twitter you can invite Midlifexpress and we will happily join you in the online community.
