The visible midlife Wonder Woman

Reading Time: 2 minutes

power pose

Please answer the following equation with the first word that enters your head:

Midlife + Women = ?

“Invisible,” did you say?

If so, you have fallen for a story reinforced by magazines, newspaper articles and consensus reality.

In my experience, this equation fails to add-up: no midlife woman to whom I’ve spoken feels invisible, and, even if it’s true, we can use it to our advantage. After all, it is a super power. Remember the Invisible Man and his ability to eavesdrop, foil criminal plans and go about his business unobstructed?

Instant visibility boost

However, if you are feeling invisible (no matter what your age) and need a visibility boost then try a Wonder Woman two minute power pose. It will alter your body chemistry by lowering cortisol (your stress hormone) and raising testosterone (your confidence hormone).

Professor Amy Cuddy is a social psychologist at the Harvard Business School and she’s conducted a remarkable series of experiments on body language. She found that standing for two minutes in an open “high power” pose affects how you feel about yourself and how others see you.

She recommends the Wonder Woman pose whenever you need confidence and presence.

The Wonder Woman “High Power” pose:

Find a private space (the bathroom will do) and stand with your feet a hip width apart and with your hands on your hips. Keep your spine erect and your gaze parallel to the floor as you follow your breath as it moves in and out of your body. Do this for two minutes.

It will do wonders for your confidence and others will see you more positively.

Whoohoo! Thanks for this reminder Claire. I find doing the warrior pose in yoga has a similar effect!

No worries, Merridy. It’s a wonderful confidence booster, isn’t it? Thanks, too, for alerting me to the amazing Professor Cuddy via the YouTube clip above.

I’m all over this one! Thanks for a great and affirming reminder that my body tells my brain what is what. Even if I need to fake it for a few moments, my brain trusts the body and is happily duped into registering my body language “as what is so”. I’ll add that in workshops I do, I ask women to strike a similar pose and then with great fervor declare: “I have absolutely no complaints. Everything is going my way….and……I pivot to the positive in every situation!” Wow, what a transformation occurs —not to mention a cascade of laughter!
Your blogs are so upbeat “Sister Women Australians”–THANK YOU!
